Molloy’s started baking at Main Street, Roscommon in 1922. James Molloy, grandfather of current proprietor Declan and great grandfather of Mark Molloy returned to Ireland from America and purchased the property, then owned by the Melia Family on the Main St., of Roscommon.

James ran a very successful business which included the bakery, grocery, hardware, fertilizer, and a pub. He was also the local agent for the Cunard Shipping line which brought many Irish people to the United States over a period stretching form 1923-1963. James had a large family and two of his sons Barry and Noel decided to enter into the family business.

In 1992 Declan took over the bakery business from his father Barry and continues to run the business from a new custom built bakery on the outskirts of the town. As always Molloy’s continues to be a very family orientated business with Declan, his wife Mary T, son Mark and daughter Jackie-Ann all working together.

Things have changed dramatically over the years from being only able to produce the ‘Batch’ loaf when the bakery first started, so called because the bakers would produce 26 dozen at a time that’s 312 loaves!! Since then Molloy’s has expanded somewhat and now has a range of over 150 products.

Molloy’s bakery currently operates from a custom built bakery, which was finished in the mid 1990’s. As always Molloy’s has a huge emphasis on quality and service. The retail shop is now a Mecca for quality food products, sourced from local, national and international producers. Let us not forget the huge range of breads, cakes, pastries and scones produced in house by our team of qualified bakers. Our daily range from the bakery consists of our traditional soda breads, scones, rock buns and a large selection of fresh cream cakes and pastries. Seasonal products which involve a lot of thought and imagination give the shop a lift, with some eye catching decoration. Mother’s day, Father’s day, Christmas and Easter to name a few, provide a buzz around the shop, between employees and customers alike. Molloy’s is literally a very hands on company, with every product produced in the bakery being handled (with care), on at least 2 occasions and up as far as 6 or 7 times before it reaches point of sale. The equipment has changed, the employees has changed and the management has changed but the quality and pride in the products we produce remain the same as when James Molloy started back in 1922.

As a business we continually look to the future. Our customers are the most important ingredient to our success. We have over the years modified our products to suit the changing needs of our customers. One of our most sought after ranges is our SPELT products. They are a range of breads and cakes which are made from 100% Spelt grain (not gluten free). These are produced daily in house. With the ever growing demand for specialised dietary foods, Molloy’s endeavours to diversify and offer our customers products to suit their needs. This can only be achieved by closely working with our suppliers and of course our loyal customers.
